What I consider the book that can be read without any need of a chessboard is the classic "Logical chess move by move" by Irving Chernev. Zbigniew Brzezinski, in his book, The Grand Chessboard, had said that doing so would be crucial for maintaining “American primacy,” partly because of the huge oil reserves around the Caspian Sea.

The standard contemporary way to record moves and refer to the squares of the chessboard is algebraic chess notation The files are identified by the letters a to h, from left to right from the white player's point of view, and the ranks by the numbers 1 to 8, with 1 being closest to the white square on the board is identified by a unique coordinate pairing, from a1 to h8.

Many great english-language collections aren't translated into algebraic yet. Botvinnik's One Hundred Selected Games comes to mind. Tartakover's Master Games of Chess is another. Fischer's My 60 Memorable Games would be a candidate for the OP, though a less modern player would be better to start off such study with.

Polgar's book on combinations and progressive learning is well done and one of the best books for someone learning or even intermediate. his daughters are outstanding chess players for a reason. Averbakh's book on chess ending, available in English on disc is a well-organized educational book on endings that I put in the top 5.
